Stay Informed About Radon: Facts and Implications for Home Inspections

Radon, a stealthy radioactive gas from the soil, poses an invisible risk to homeowners. While it’s odorless, colorless, and chemically inactive, radon is far from harmless. This gas is a natural byproduct of uranium degradation happening beneath our feet.

Fortunately, when radon molecules reach the open air, they tend to dissipate and pose no significant health risk. However, when this sneaky gas sneaks into enclosed spaces such as homes, it can accumulate to dangerous levels, posing a silent risk for residents. It’s estimated that about 1 in every 15 homes has high radon levels capable of affecting occupants’ health.

Why should this concern you as a homeowner? Well, radon is notoriously notorious as the second-largest cause of lung cancer in the United States, trailing behind only smoking. Annually, over 20,000 lung cancer fatalities are attributed to radon exposure, marking its significance.

That’s why at Richland Public Health, under the guidance of Joe Harrod, Director of Environmental Health, we advocate robustly for radon testing as part of a comprehensive home inspection.

The first step to mitigating the risk is understanding whether a problem exists, and our easy-to-use home testing kits can help homeowners do just that.
If an initial short-term radon test reveals a reading of 4.0 picocuries per liter of air or higher – EPA’s recommended action level – we advise a second, long-term test to evaluate the situation accurately. This sounds technical, but we aim to ensure you have all the information necessary for a safe and healthy environment.

The screening test spans 3 to 7 days, with results communicated within 5-7 days of sample submission. Conducting a radon home inspection with us can be life-saving. With the knowledge from radon testing, homeowners can take proactive steps to ensure their indoor environment remains a safe haven. Let us guide you through this process, transforming awareness into action against radon.
