2011 Final Vital Statistics

The Mansfield/Ontario/Richland County Health Department has posted the totals for causes of death in 2011 as well as the statistics for births in the county.

The statistics do not include deaths or birth recorded in Shelby that are handled by the Shelby City Health Department. There may be a few changes in the causes of death as five deaths were still pending autopsy reports.

  2. Births and Births to Teens for 2011

Deaths

  • There were 1,078 deaths in the county last year, with men accounting for 53% of those deaths.
  • Heart disease and heart attacks remain the number one cause of death in the county, accounting for 37% of all deaths. The percentage of heart-related deaths was only eight less than the statistical average over the last 17 years (see averages here).
  • Cancer remained the second leading cause of death with 205 fatalities. Lung diseases followed with 101 deaths.
  • Alzheimer’s was listed as the fourth leading cause with 64 deaths. The Health Department has tracked Alzheimer’s as a cause of death since 2001. Alzheimer’s eclipsed strokes as the fourth leading cause of death for the second time since 2001.

Births

  • There were 1,167 births in the county last year, 20 more than last year but the second lowest total in the last 21 years (see report here).
  • There were 126 births to teens (ages 13 to 19). That is the lowest percentage of teen births (.107) in the last 21 years.
  • The number of births to unwed mothers was nearly 40% (.398), the highest percentage since 2001. Unwed teens accounted for 26% of the total unwed in county births.
