ABOUT SOLID & INFECTIOUS WASTE
The Solid & Infectious Waste Division of Environmental Health at the Mansfield/Ontario/Richland County Health Department is designated by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency to license and inspect the solid waste facilities within Mansfield, Ontario and Richland County. The facilities include the transfer station, compost facilities, landfills, and large generators of infectious waste. Inspection frequency varies based on classification of the facility and promotes compliance with the respective rules.
The rules and regulations pertaining to solid and infectious waste disposal are promulgated by the Ohio Environmental Protection Agency and can be found at www.epa.state.oh.us/dsiwm. The Ohio EPA surveys the health department annually to assure that we are implementing the program correctly.
This division also inspects solid waste related nuisance complaints. Complaints can range from illegal activities such as open burning of waste to open dumping of tires or other solid waste.
“Solid waste” is any unwanted residual solid or semi-solid material as a result from industrial, commercial, agriculture and community operations, excluding materials from earth or materials from construction and demolition to other substances that are not harmful to public health. Solid waste includes, but is not limited to garbage, tires, combustible and non-combustible materials, street dirt, and debris. Solid waste does not include any material that is an infectious waste or a hazardous waste.
By providing these services, this division is trying to protect surface and groundwater from pollution.
