IMPORTANT UPDATE: October 16, 2009 (11 a.m.)
SEASONAL FLU CLINICS: ONE REMAINING , ONE CANCELLED
Richland County, OH — The Mansfield/Ontario/Richland County Health Department has announced that the final seasonal flu clinic will be Monday, October 19 from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m. or until the supply runs out. That clinic will be held at the Richland County Fairgrounds in Fairhaven Hall.
The Health Department has cancelled the seasonal flu clinic in Lucas, originally scheduled for Tuesday, October 20, due to a limited supply of remaining vaccine.
“We had an exceptional turnout for the flu shots at our clinics this year,” said Amy Vincent, Director of Nursing for the Mansfield/Ontario/Richland County Health Department. “There has been a change to the distribution cycle this year for the seasonal flu vaccine,” Vincent added. “We are being told supplies of seasonal flu vaccine will be shipped later in the fall. Our primary focus now is H1N1 vaccination for the community.”
According to the Centers for Disease Control (CDC), the majority of people reporting to hospitals with influenza-like-illnesses have H1N1 flu virus. The Health Department is receiving H1N1 vaccine shots and nasal spray. The Health Department will follow the priority guidelines established by the CDC.
According to the CDC those on the priority list to get H1N1 shots are:
• pregnant women
• people who live with or care for children younger than 6 months of age
• healthcare and emergency medical services personnel
• persons between the ages of 6 months and 24 years old
• people ages of 25 through 64 years of age who are at higher risk for 2009 H1N1 because of chronic health disorders or compromised immune systems
The Health Department will announce when H1N1 clinics for the priority group are scheduled. Over the next few months, the Health Department expects to receive an adequate supply of the H1N1 vaccine to provide shots to anyone who is interested in receiving the vaccine.
The Health Department continues to recommend everyday actions to stay healthy:
• Cover your nose and mouth with a tissue when you cough or sneeze. Throw the tissue in the trash after you use it. • Wash your hands often with soap and water, especially after you cough or sneeze. Alcohol-based hands cleaners are also effective.
• Avoid touching your eyes, nose or mouth. Germs spread that way.
• Stay home if you get sick.
• Follow public health advice regarding school closures, avoiding crowds and other social distancing measures.
• Listen to the media for updates throughout the flu season.

flubug2009 SEASONAL FLU IMMUNIZATION SCHEDULE RELEASED
Posted August 24, 2009 —
“Be Wise, Immunize” is the theme the Mansfield/Ontario/Richland County Health Department for the 2009 Seasonal Flu Immunizations. The Health Department wants everyone to know they can protect themselves and their family by getting a seasonal flu vaccine. The 2009 Seasonal Flu Immunization Schedule is now available.
There are 11 sites scheduled for flu immunization clinics with the first site at the Richland County Fairgrounds on September 29 from 1 to 6 p.m. The schedule is available on the Flu Hotline at 419-774-4553 and is online at www.richlandhealth.org.
Flu vaccine is available for adults 19 years and older and children from ages 6 months old through 18 years old. Children less than 19 years old must be accompanied by a parent or legal guardian or another adult with written permission from the parent or guardian to get a shot. Flu vaccines for children 6 months old through 18 years old are also available through the regular neighborhood immunization clinics beginning in October. Call 419-774-8115 for those dates, locations and times.
Cost for flu vaccine is $10 for children age 6 months through 18 years old. Medicaid is accepted. Adult flu vaccine is $20 for age 19 and up. Medicare and Medicaid Cards are accepted. In order to speed processing, adults are asked to bring their driver’s license.
“Every year in the United States there are more than 200,000 hospitalizations and 36,000 deaths from complications of influenza,” Amy Vincent, Director of Nursing at the Mansfield/Ontario/Richland County Health Department, said. These events could be prevented with a simple flu vaccine. We are hoping more families will choose to get immunized. Flu vaccines are not just for seniors anymore. Be wise, immunize.
“Even if you don’t fall into a high risk category for complications from the flu, you should get a flu shot,” Vincent added. “Nobody likes to be sick. Getting the flu will cause you to miss work or school along with your favorite activities. You might also pass the flu on to your family, friends or co-workers. Protect yourself. Protect others. Get vaccinated.”
Changes in times and dates for flu clinics may be necessary. Any changes will be listed on the Health Department website and the Flu Hotline (419-774-4553). The flu immunization program is partially funded by levy dollars.
